about

In 2020, along with the rest of Melbourne’s music makers, Belmar Records was forced to suspend operations due to the Covid 19 lockdown. We have taken the opportunity to go back through the vaults and dig out some rare and unreleased gems. This collection of tracks all fall somewhere in the cracks between Rhythm & Blues and Soul. This is Grubby Rhythm and Soul vol. 1.

Here’a a little bit more about the artists and songs (in order of appearance)
Quick note: On these tracks the band is the Belmar House Band, a floating line up usual featuring (unless otherwise stated) GG Gray (drums & percussion) Dave Allardice (piano, keys) Dai “Jukebox” Jones (guitar) and Steve Purcell (electric and acoustic bass) Variations in personal and extra guests are included in the track details below.

Hammond organ master Tim Neal drove up from his home near Barwon Heads for an epic session back in Feb 2018, recording 6 tracks including the 1974 Chaka Khan hit Tell Me Something Good (which features Tim on a rare lead vocal and a late night Bari overdub!) The session also produced the Hammond instrumental on side 2 which he wrote on the way up called On The Way Up.
Since we first heard her busking in Sydney Rd in 2014, Mon Shelford’s amazing voice and prolific song writing have made her a regular feature in the studio and on our Top 10 compilations. She released her first album The Belmar Sessions thru Belmar in 2018. At a session on 1st Oct 2019 she recorded Kiss and Say Goodbye (originally a hit for the Manhattans in 1976) and a 70’s inspired version of her song No Other Reason (featuring Shane Rhyll on 2nd guitar and Tom Purcell on Fender Jazz Bass)
The Pearly Shells are, in fact, The Belmar house band by another name, the one they use when they put on their suits and go out to play in public. The instrumental Death Rattle featuring Bob Glaesemann on sax and Andy Swann on drums was recorded in 2015 and previously released on Belmar Top 10 vol 4.
Bluesman Andy Swann, The Singing Plumber, recorded his song River Was Deep at a June 2014 session with himself on vocals and drums. He’s also added the organ, congas and acoustic guitar overdubs because he can! Rob Glaesemann again on Tenor sax.
Vocalist and song writer Adaja Black first visited Belmar Records way back in 2012 after she sat in and impressed at a gig. She was visiting Melbourne again in July 2019 and we of course invited her back with the usual request “bring yourself and a song”. She brought a song of hers, Smoke and Mirrors. Other guests on the session where Shane Rhyll (guitar) Sam Price (drums) and Tom Purcell (P. Bass)
Melbourne Queen of the blues Kerri Simpson is a local legend and her songs are regularly featured on our compilations as well as her 2014 Belmar album release 4am. She brought this song I Wonder along with 3 other originals (and her drummer “Shorty” Shortte) to a session back in Jan 2017. Guest piano player was Danny Bourne. (B.Vs are Mon Shelford, G.G. Gray and S Purcell)
Belmar regular guest guitarist Andy Reid was playing in Continental Robert Susz’s touring band when they visited Melbourne in Feb 2014 and he invited him along to a session. Robert in turn brought singer Tanya-Lee Davies as his special guest and the resulting session produced 6 tracks including this great version of I Can’t Stand it by Steve Cropper. Dai Jones on dobro & the horns are Rob Glaesemann (tenor) and Paul Coyle (trumpet)
Vocalist Nichaud Fitzgibbon is Melbourne jazz royalty but she steered this Jan 2015 session in a different direction with a Reggae version of To Sir With Love (with special guest Sharky Ramos on drums) This 2020 re mix is courtesy of Dub master Mick Dick.
Now living in Paris, Jazz chanteuse Hetty Kate recorded over a dozen sessions at Belmar while based in Melbourne between 2013-2018 covering jazz, pop and even art rock. The track Hymn for Him is from her 2015 Belmar album Uh Oh! with the Twenty 20s, featuring Dale Lindrea on Tenor guitar, Sharky Ramos (drums) and on the horns Dean Hilson (sax) and Vinnie Bourke (trumpet)
The Allardicians is the moniker we use when Belmar house band keyboard player Dave Allardice is calling the shots. The track Duck Down was written and recorded at a session in May 2012, the week the great Stax records & Booker T bass player Duck Dunn died, aged 70 (after completing 5 double shows at the Bluenote in Tokyo the night before!) With Sharky Ramos, drums and “Magic” Sim Martin on 2nd guitar. Previously released on our very first Top 10 #1.
cheers Steve Purcell
